I starting reading Mr. Fry when his novel Making History was published, a book I enjoyed a lot. So, when I saw this autobiography, I was in the mood to give it a try. His second autobiography, this volume covers Mr.
Fry's life from his college years through the beginnings of his career as a writer and actor. Knowing his wit, I had high expectations for this book and they were well met. His Oxbridge cleverness keep an eye on all those "C" chapter headings and his pleasantly ponderous and posh turn of phrase are on brilliant display here. If nothing else, his prose is a pleasure to read.
But, of course, it is the stories that really generate the interest. I really knew very little about Mr. Fry apart from what he's put on screen and it was fun getting to know him--his love of cars and computers, for instance. I didn't realize he was such a close friend of Emma Thompson, and it was interesting to learn about his stephen fry autobiography amazon meeting with Laurie.
His analysis of their complementary differences is quite wonderful. Along the way, we meet, of course, a whole bevy of name British actors and comedians. He is also very self-perceptive about his compulsive behaviors, if his self- deprecation does occasionally get wearisome. To be honest, I find tales of the rise of British actors incredibly interesting because I find their dedication to their craft to be generally better than their American counterparts.
If Mr. Fry downplays his skills, he cannot hide the mass of work he did from early on to make himself a success. Additionally, he has credits as a writer and a love of commercial and voice-over work that is refreshing. I get the feeling that might be a lucky thing. In this book, he hints at his troubled youth that he covered in that book. He also hints at a decent into drugs in the years after those described here that will likely be covered in a future volume.
I find neither of these topics inherently interesting and tend to stay away from them. A great read for word-lovers. Stephen Fry is a real wordsmith - if you stephen fry autobiography amazon like big words or words for the sake of words this is probably not the book for you. However if you LOVE words this is funny, and sentimental and insightful; there is a little too much angst-ridden hand wringing which can be a bit tiresome, but other than that a lovely wordy read.
I had no idea before now that Stephen Frye was so funny! This book is no exception, although at a certain point he started talking about a lot of people that I as an American had never heard of, which isn't his fault, really. I think the thing that may have affected the ratings of this book generally is his style. He is hilarious live or televised, and his writing is the SAME way.
I find it extremely funny, personally. His loquaciousness and wordiness are likely off-putting to some people. If you like him on you tube, etc, you will love him here, too!!!! Get it?! And wordy? Why use 20 words when will do? Often throughout this book, you just have to roll your eyes and skip a couple of paragraphs. If I had no visual on Stephen Fry and had to read this in braille, not only would my fingers be on fire but I could picture him in my head with ease.
Whilst he uses words here and there that I wonder even exist, they are always in context and utterly in character. I mean, who can keep his readers' attention for over two pages describing filling, lighting and then inhalation of his pipe? Soooo naughty, Stephen but then we did in those days, didn't we, as did my grandfather who fought in the trenches in WW1 and died aged 85 of his pipe.
His writing is sensual, evocative and delicious, only occasionally running out of control to the point where I lost interest and skipped on. Don't think I have ever read any biography word for word, so this is no exception. But with Stephen, you can't skip too much or you will miss out on something major. He might ramble on a bit - nay, he does ramble on a bit - about the state of theatre in Cambridge but quick as a flash, there in one paragraph, he mentions when he "came out" as a gay man to his parents.
Easily missed, the precision of the statement with his mother and father's wonderful responses will stay with me forever. Candid, funny, erudite, this book enables us to learn more about one of the most entertaining and interesting artists of our time. See more reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I've devoured it in a stephen fry autobiography amazon and am now looking to buy his latest bio, More Fool Me, which I understand continues where this book leaves off and perhaps even goes deeper into some of the stories and etc.
When I started reading this book I found out that Moab was actually the first bio, roughly covering the years, as Stephen himself writes, between birth and prison. Not being able to drop the current book however, I haven't waited to read Moab before Chronicles. But I will, no doubt! So perhaps I would recommend you either buy the three together, Moab, Chronicles and the last bio, More Fool Me, or buy them and read them one by one, or do whatever you want in any order you wish but if you like Stephen Fry, don't miss out on this jewel of his!
It encompasses his time at Cambridge and subsequent burgeoning career in comedy, up to Black Adder II. This was a delight to listen to. As someone who also loves literature and the English language, hearing Stephen describe his time at Cambridge and beyond, noting in the very beginning that he would be verbose, is a joy. Hearing him describe how he fell into various types of work and his surprise at his success is interesting, and his delight at working with Hugh and Rowan over this period in his life is expressed beautifully.
Verified Purchase. This very wordy account covers Stephen Fry's days from Cambridge where he was involved in drama groups and on through his experiences in Stage, Radio and Television. There are many names and productions referred to that you will remember if you were around in those days. A good book for anyone wanting to know more about Stephen Fry's career.
Made even better as it was read by himself. A number of pages that had to be Not bad. I'm half way through the book and I'm enjoying it very much so far. It's funny as expected as well as revealing. There is no better book to read than one written by someone is in love with the English language. It is not love for the sake of self-indulgence, or intellectual superiority but it is a love that Fry is compelled to share his anecdotes with others.
